Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 workers may select and appoint from among their fellow employees, a Safety Representative. The Safety Representative role includes the undertaking of tasks such as workplace inspections, accidents investigation, investigation of complaints and consultation on workplace health and safety matters. Training is required for safety representatives and employers are required to ensure that such training is comprehensive and allows Safety Representatives to fulfil their role in the workplace.
Preferred entry level and special requirements:
A good working knowledge of English, a Level 4 Certificate, a Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experience.

Overview:
This FETAC module is designed to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge to fulfill
their role as a safety representative; to promote and maintain safety and health in the context of the
learner’s workplace and to effectively represent employees on health and safety issues.
National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ): This course qualifies as a component certificate and
counts as 1 credit towards FETAC (level 5) Certificates. It is a recognised module within the NFQ.
Aim:
This FETAC module is designed to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge to fulfill their
role as a safety representative; to promote and maintain safety and health in the context of the
learner’s workplace and to effectively represent employees on health and safety issues; to enable them
to communicate safety and health information to peers and supervisors and to advise management on
a range of occupational safety and health issues in the workplace. Participants will be provided with
the tools to help promote a culture of safety and health in the workplace.
General objectives / outcomes of the course:
The learner will be able to: understand the concept of
workplace Health and Safety; be familiar with core legislation in the area of safety, health and Welfare; understand and gain basic competence in hazard identification and risk assessment; recognise the factors influencing workplace health, safety and welfare; apply Health & Safety principles and
procedures in the workplace; promote a safety culture in the workplace.
Methodology:
The course is presented in units and includes problem based learning and practical
exercises. There will be two assignments to complete and, on the last day of the course, a one and a
half hour exam based on the course material presented.
