Manual Handling Instructors Course (5 Days over 2 weeks)

Manual Handling Instructor & Assessor Course
(This course is currently being updated to meet FETAC Level 6 Standards)

Five day course delivered over a 2 week period - typically Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday of the first week and Monday, Tuesday of the second week.

Participants are trained to conduct Manual Handling Risk Assessments and deliver Manual Handling Training both in-company and externally. The course is intensive and highly participative where instructional skills as well as the theoretical and practical aspects of manual handling are addressed.

Aim / Objectives
instruct others on the theory and techniques of safe manual handling. To conduct manual handling task risk assessments related to the organisations needs. To recommend preventative measures, in order to eliminate or reduce the associated risks of injury while carrying out manual handling tasks. To comply with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005 and the Safety, Health and Welfare at work (General Application) Regulations 2007.
 

Who should attend?
Those wishing to attain the skills and knowledge required to be able to develop and delivery manual handling sessions in their workplace.

Course Content:
 - Occupational Health & Safety legislation relating to Manual Handling.
 - Anatomy and physiology of the spine and how hazardous postures can contribute to the risk of injury  
   while carrying out manual handling tasks.
 - Guidance on fitness for manual handling tasks including diet, rest and sleep
 - Specific information relating to manual hazards identified in the corporate Safety Statement and details of
   existing and additional control measures to avoid or reduce associated injuries.
 - Current best practice on good handling techniques and practical application.
 - Procedures for dealing with unfamiliar loads.
 - Instructions on appropriate footwear and clothing while handling loads, and the impact of wearing of    
   mandatory or corporate personal protective equipment eg corporate uniforms
 - Instructions on the provision and maintenance of the workplace in a safe condition to ensure safety 
   when carrying out manual handling tasks
 -The importance of co-operation of trained employees in the maintenance of a safe place of work, safe 
   plant and equipment and the application of safe work procedures
 -The importance of reporting defects that may have adverse effects on the safe carrying out of manual 
   handling tasks
 -The importance of workplace supervision to ensure that the safe manual handling techniques learned 
   and demonstrated are transferred to the workplace

Methodology
A practical and highly participative approach will be used throughout the course. When theory is introduced it will be applied to practical situations encountered by the participants. A variety of training aids will be used.

Validation will stand for a five year period

Requirements
This course will be taught and evaluated in English unless previously arranged. Student should identify any special needs on booking the course. Students will be required to demonstrate lifting techniques and therefore must be physically capable of lifting in order to participate in the course.

Evaluation Methods
Participants will be required to undertake a written and practical exam.
